(The 3D is niftily utilized, mostly to give two-dimensional animation the sensation of depth without betraying its well-established design aesthetic.) It’s positively bursting at the seams with Gravity Falls lore and mythology, although not overwhelmingly so if you’re just looking for an ace puzzle-platform game, you can easily pick up and play this. You can really feel that, in every moment of the game – in the way the characters interact with each other, in the winking self-awareness of the narrative, and in the way that the game is densely packed with clues, inside jokes, fan favorite characters (so far, though, no Tad Strange), even visual nods to the way the show’s animation is composed. Most of this authenticity has to do with the fact that Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch was a chief creative advisor on the project. One of our favorite moments from early in the game comes when a disgruntled gnome, upset with the leadership of gnome favorite Jeff (he’s the one with the brown beard), gives his reasoning for disliking Jeff’s leadership: “You know he accidentally forwarded his Christmas letter to the entire forest without proofreading it? Total embarrassment.” Like we said: classic Gravity Falls.

Dialogue, too, is spot on, with numerous callbacks to the series (there are several gags related to the very first episode of the series, which is where the gnomes were introduced) and even direct lines from the show. From the opening animations, which capture the feeling of the show’s title sequence, to the authentic way the characters move (the game is built on the Rayman Origins engine, so everything has a fluidly cartoony feeling) it’s all totally Gravity Falls. We’ve only played a small portion of the game (it just came out on Tuesday), but we’re really struck by how faithful the game is to the series. The top screen of the Nintendo DS is devoted to your actual physical adventures – running, jumping, using your magical gnome gear (Mabel gets an enchanted sweater while Dipper gets supercharged bracelets, both provided by fan favorite gnome Shmebulock), while the bottom screen is used for inventory, objectives, and, of course, helpful hints from the journals.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the video game takes the form of a puzzle platform-style game, with Dipper and Mabel embarking on a series of quests related to the missing gnome gemulets (small stones that possess magical powers). This game is a perfect extension of the series and will do much to tide you over until Monday’s mind-blowing episode premieres. And while there have been a number of Gravity Falls-themed mobile and desktop games, this week sees the release of the first really-for-real video game: Gravity Falls: Legend of the Gnome Gemuletsfor Nintendo 3DS. Then there was also “Soos’ Really Great Pinball Story (Is That a Good Title? Do They Have to Be Puns or Whatever),” a section of “Bottomless Pit” that saw Dipper and Mabel (and Soos) terrorized by a possessed pinball machine.

In the Season 1 episode “Fight Fighters,” characters from an 8-bit fighting game enter the real world, and in “Soos and the Real Girl,” lovable Soos falls in love with a dating simulator video game. Gravity Falls is a Disney XD series that has, on more than one occasion, tipped its hat towards the world of video games.
